Frequently Asked Questions about Indore Metro

Yes! Indore Metro started commercial operations on June 1, 2025, after inauguration by PM Narendra Modi on May 31, 2025. It is Madhya Pradesh's first metro and India's newest metro city. The super priority corridor covers 6 km with 5 stations. Full Phase 1 (29 stations, 33.53 km ring line) is expected by 2030.

Indore Metro currently operates from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM on Monday to Saturday (timings revised from the initial 10 AM–6 PM schedule as of August 2025). Sunday and holiday timings may vary. Trains run at fixed intervals. Please verify latest timings at the official MPMRCL website or Twitter handle @IndoreMPMRCL.

The official fare structure has not been publicly announced yet by MPMRCL. Free trial rides were offered initially on the priority corridor. MPMRCL is implementing an Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system with DMRC support, supporting QR code and NFC-based payments. NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) will be accepted. Fares are expected to be comparable to similar metros — estimated ₹10–₹50 for the full corridor.

Five stations are currently operational on the super priority corridor: Maa Ahilyabai (formerly Gandhi Nagar), Rani Avantika (formerly Super Corridor), Rani Durgavati (formerly Vijay Nagar), Jhalkari Bai (formerly Radha Swami), and Operation Sindoor (formerly Khajrana). These stations were renamed in June 2025 on instructions of Kailash Vijayvargiya.

The Yellow Line (Line 3) is a 33.53 km ring line with 29 stations: Bhawarsala Square → MR 10 Road → ISBT/MR10 Flyover → Chandragupta Square → Hira Nagar → Bapat Square → Meghdoot Garden → Vijay Nagar Square → Radisson Square → Mumtaj Bag Colony → Bengali Square → Patrakar Colony → Palasia Square → Indore Railway Station → Rajwada Palace → Chota Ganpati → Bada Ganpati → Ramchandra Nagar Square → BSF/Kalani Nagar → Airport → Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Terminal → Maharani Lakshmi Bai → Rani Avanti Bai Lodhi → Rani Durgavati → Veerangana Jhalkari Bai. It is a ring line connecting back to the starting point.

Yes! Devi Ahilyabai Holkar International Airport is a planned station on the Yellow Line. The underground section near the airport will be Indore's first underground metro station. Construction near the airport is underway — big machines have arrived and digging has started for the station outside the airport near Bijasan Tekri. This will be one of the key highlights of the full Yellow Line.

Yes! Rajwada Palace is one of the planned stations on the Yellow Line's underground section. The underground corridor (~8.5 km) will pass through MG Road, Treasure Island, Ramchandra Nagar, Rajwada, High Court, BSF, Bada Ganpati, and Airport. Rajwada station will provide direct metro connectivity to Indore's iconic historic palace.

Yes! Indore Railway Station is a planned stop on the Yellow Line. It will be part of the underground section, providing seamless connectivity between the city's main railway terminal and the metro system. This will significantly reduce last-mile travel for train passengers.

Indore Metro is built and operated by Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL), a joint venture of the Government of India and Government of Madhya Pradesh. The Union Cabinet approved the project in October 2018 at an estimated cost of ₹5,000 crore. Construction began in February 2019. Trains were manufactured and supplied by Alstom under the Make in India initiative. Phase 1 revised cost: ₹7,500 crore.

Phase 1 cost: ₹7,500 crore. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $190 million loan for the project. The total master plan (94 km, 4 lines) is estimated at ₹12,000–₹15,000 crore. A 47 km Indore–Ujjain metro corridor has also been proposed with DPR preparation underway since December 2024.

Yes! Indore Metro has been designed as a driverless (Unattended Train Operation — UTO) metro system, making it one of India's most technologically advanced metros. The system uses CBTC (Communication Based Train Control) signalling for fully automated operations at speeds up to 80 km/h. Each train has 3 coaches (expandable to 6) with a capacity of 300 passengers.

The master plan envisions 4 metro lines and 2 spurs covering 94 km total across Indore. Phase 1 includes only the Yellow Line (Line 3) — a 33.53 km ring line with 29 stations. Phase 2 adds 10.98 km (11 stations) and Phase 3 covers 14 km with underground sections. Future lines will connect Bhawarsala, Sanwer, Holkar University, and Ujjain.

The underground section (~8.5 km) is planned with 7 underground stations: Rajwada, Indore Railway Station, Ramchandra Nagar Square, BSF/Kalani Nagar, Bada Ganpati, and stations near the Airport. This underground section is the most complex part of Phase 1, starting near Treasure Island on MG Road.

MPMRCL is implementing an Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system in partnership with DMRC. The system supports QR code tickets (via counter/app/online), NFC phone-based payments, and the NCMC National Common Mobility Card. Ticket Vending Machines (TVMs) will be available at all stations.

The Super Priority Corridor is the first operational section of Indore Metro — a 6 km elevated stretch on the Yellow Line with 5 stations: Maa Ahilyabai (Gandhi Nagar Depot end), Rani Avantika, Rani Durgavati, Jhalkari Bai, and Operation Sindoor. It was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi on May 31, 2025. This is also the first section where the Alstom-built driverless trains operate commercially.

Yes, all Indore Metro stations are designed with universal accessibility standards — including lifts, ramps, tactile paths for visually impaired passengers, and dedicated wheelchair spaces inside trains. The driverless trains also have automated door control and PA systems for announcements.

Yes! The Super Corridor area — Indore's IT hub with Infosys, TCS, and other major companies — is directly served by the operational priority corridor. Three stations on the priority corridor (Rani Avantika, Rani Durgavati, Jhalkari Bai) serve the Super Corridor area, making it one of the key commuter routes.

A 47 km Indore–Ujjain metro corridor has been proposed connecting two of Madhya Pradesh's most important cities. DMRC was commissioned to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) starting January 2025. If approved, it will be a major inter-city metro corridor passing through the Ujjain–Indore industrial and pilgrimage corridor.

Indore Metro uses 3-coach driverless trains manufactured by Alstom under the Make in India programme. Each train can carry 300 passengers (50 seated per coach). The trains are designed to be expanded to 6 coaches as ridership grows. Top speed: 80 km/h. A total of 25 train sets are approved for the project, of which 7 had already arrived by late 2024.

Full Phase 1 (Yellow Line, 29 stations, 33.53 km) is targeted for completion by 2030. Phase 2 (10.98 km, 11 stations) is expected by 2026–2027. The most complex Phase 3 (14 km underground) will follow. The MPMRCL MD conducted an on-site inspection in November 2025 and instructed expediting of all remaining civil and system works on the priority corridor and beyond.

Properties near Indore Metro stations have already seen appreciation of 40–180% since 2022, particularly along the Super Corridor and areas near planned underground stations (Rajwada, MG Road). Once the full ring line opens, connectivity-driven appreciation is expected to continue in areas like Palasia, Vijay Nagar, Bengali Square, and Airport Road.

Currently, the priority corridor is best suited for commuters in the Super Corridor IT corridor. Post August 2025, timings (1 PM–7 PM) are more suited for afternoon and evening travel. Once the full ring line opens connecting major areas like Railway Station, Rajwada, Palasia, and Airport, it will become a comprehensive daily commuting option for Indore's 35 lakh+ population.
